When you need it
Nursing pads are useful from the first days after birth, when milk comes in and leaks can be unpredictable, especially overnight or when you hear a baby cry. Many people use them through about 12 months, though some stop leaking much earlier.
What to look for
Choose disposable pads for convenience or washable cotton or bamboo pads for reuse. Look for a contoured shape that stays put inside your bra and a breathable, absorbent core. Washable pads should survive frequent laundry without pilling. Disposable pads with an adhesive strip are less likely to shift.
