Baby Beach & Swim Essentials
Shade, swim diapers and sun gear for beach and pool days
Beach and swim covers sun, sand and water days from babyhood through preschool. For young babies, the focus is shade and covering up: a pop-up beach tent and a UV swimsuit or rash guard do most of the work. Reusable swim diapers come in once your baby starts going in the water, and many pools require them.
As children grow, mineral sunscreen joins the bag, and a hooded poncho makes changing on the beach far easier. Swim vests and arm bands can help toddlers feel confident in the water, but no flotation aid replaces an adult within arm's reach. A baby pool float is an optional extra some families enjoy in calm, warm water, always with a hand on it.

Questions parents ask
- Can I put sunscreen on my baby?
- Many pediatric groups suggest keeping babies under 6 months out of direct sun and relying on shade and clothing rather than sunscreen. For older babies and toddlers, a mineral sunscreen is a common choice. Ask your pediatrician what's right for your baby.
- Do babies need swim diapers?
- Yes, if they're not potty trained and you're going in a pool or the sea. Regular diapers swell up with water, and many pools require swim diapers. Reusable ones can be rinsed and used all season.
- Are arm bands or a swim vest better?
- Swim vests tend to keep a toddler more upright and are quick to put on, while arm bands are smaller and pack easily. Neither is a lifesaving device. Stay within arm's reach whenever your child is in or near water.
- What should I pack for a beach day with a baby?
- Shade and sun protection come first: a pop-up tent, a UV swimsuit, a sun hat and swim diapers, plus plenty of drinks. Add a towel or hooded poncho, a change of clothes and a few sand toys. Our beach day checklist has the full list.
