When you need it

An O-Ball becomes useful around 3 months, when babies start reaching and can hook their fingers through the holes. It stays fun through sitting, crawling and early walking, roughly until 18 months, as babies learn to roll it, throw it and chase after it.

What to look for

Look for a light, flexible ball with plenty of finger holes and no loose parts. BPA-free plastic that can be washed in warm soapy water or the dishwasher top rack is ideal. Some versions add rattles or come as cars and teethers, which adds variety. Make sure the ball is large enough that it can't fit in baby's mouth.

O-Ball: common questions

Do I need an o-ball?
Not essential, but it's one of the most practical baby balls because it's easy to grab and easy to clean. Rolling it back and forth on the floor is simple screen-free play that babies can enjoy for months. Any soft ball with finger holes works in a similar way.
When does a baby need an o-ball?
From around 3 months, when babies start grasping, into the toddler phase at about 18 months.
