When you need it
Size 1 diapers usually come next after the newborn size, often from around 1 month, though some babies start in them from birth. Most babies use them until about 4 months, when longer stretches of sleep and growth call for size 2.
What to look for
Check the weight range on the pack, since sizing varies between brands and fit matters more than the number. Look for a snug waist, stretchy sides and leg cuffs that hold without leaving marks. Absorbency matters more now that babies may sleep for longer stretches. Many parents try a few brands in small packs before buying in bulk.
Size 1 Diapers: common questions
- Do I need a size 1 diapers?
- If you use disposable diapers, you will almost certainly go through size 1, often lots of them. Cloth diapering families can use one-size cloth diapers instead. Buying a box ahead is reasonable, but keep the receipt in case your baby grows faster than expected.
- When does a baby need a size 1 diapers?
- Most babies need size 1 diapers from around 1 month, once they outgrow newborn sizes. They typically last until about 4 months.
