When you need it
Soft washcloths are useful from birth for sponge baths before the umbilical stump heals, and for gentle tub baths after that. They stay handy through about 36 months for wiping sticky faces and hands after meals, cleaning up after messy play and cooling a warm forehead on a summer day.
What to look for
Choose soft, thin cotton, muslin or bamboo cloths that feel gentle on skin, fit easily in one hand and dry quickly between uses. Buy a multipack of eight or more so you always have clean ones ready by the tub and the high chair. Look for cloths with stitched edges that survive hot washes without fraying or turning scratchy. Light colors make it easy to see when they need washing.
