When you need it
Babies usually start with stacking rings around 6 months, mostly pulling rings off and chewing them. Putting rings back on comes later, often closer to the first birthday, and sorting them by size follows in the second year. Most children are finished with them by around 24 months.
What to look for
Choose rings big enough to be safe for mouthing, with a smooth, rounded post and no small detachable parts. Wood with a non-toxic finish or BPA-free plastic both work well. Bright colors and clearly graduated sizes help with sorting. A wide, weighted base keeps the post from tipping over.
Stacking Rings: common questions
- Do I need a stacking rings?
- It's a classic, not a must. Stacking cups or a few simple blocks teach similar skills. If you like straightforward, screen-free toys that grow with baby for a year or more, it's a good pick.
- When does a baby need a stacking rings?
- From around 6 months, when babies sit and grab, until about 2 years old.
