When you need it
A footmuff is useful from the first months if you live somewhere with cold winters, and some versions fit infant car seats too. It stays practical through the toddler years, roughly until 3 years, as long as your child rides in the stroller in chilly weather.
What to look for
Check that the footmuff has harness slots that line up with your stroller, so you can still buckle your child correctly over it. A water-resistant outer layer, a warm but breathable lining and zips that open fully make it easier to use and clean. Machine-washable fabric is a big plus. Avoid bulky footmuffs in car seats unless the car seat manual specifically allows them.
Stroller Footmuff: common questions
- Do I need a stroller footmuff?
- In cold climates many parents find it close to essential, since it stays put better than loose blankets that slip or blow away. In mild climates, a light blanket or a warm outfit is usually enough. Ask your pediatrician if you have questions about keeping your baby at a comfortable temperature.
- When does a baby need a stroller footmuff?
- A baby needs a footmuff once temperatures drop and you still go out for walks, from the first winter onward. It is most useful in fall and winter.
