When you need it
A travel crib is useful from birth if you visit relatives, stay in hotels or need a second sleep space at home. Many families use one until about 3 years, or until the child reaches the crib's height and weight limits or can climb out.
What to look for
Check the folded size and weight, how quickly it sets up and folds down, and whether it fits in your car or luggage. Use only the mattress made for the crib, never extra padding, and follow the height, weight and age limits. Breathable mesh sides let you see in and keep air flowing. Some models include a bassinet level for newborns, which is useful if you travel early.
Travel Crib: common questions
- Do I need a travel crib?
- Many families find it very handy, but not everyone needs one. Hotels and rentals often offer cribs, though quality varies, so ask ahead. If you rarely travel, you can borrow one when needed, and always follow safe sleep guidance from your pediatrician.
- When does a baby need a travel crib?
- A travel crib is needed whenever your baby sleeps away from home. It is useful from the first trips, often in the first months, through about 3 years.
