When you need it
A baby first aid kit is worth having from birth so you are not scrambling during the first fever, scrape or late-night worry. It stays useful through about 60 months and beyond, as long as you restock it as your child grows.
What to look for
Look for a kit with bandages in small sizes, a dosing syringe, saline, gauze, tweezers, a thermometer and a cold pack. A clear case with labeled compartments helps you find things fast. Check expiration dates on anything inside and replace items as you use them. Add your pediatrician's number and the Poison Control number (1-800-222-1222) to the case, and ask your pediatrician before giving any medicine.
Baby First Aid Kit: common questions
- Do I need a baby first aid kit?
- Having basic supplies on hand is very useful, but you do not need a pre-made kit. Many families build their own from items they already have in the medicine cabinet.
- When does a baby need a baby first aid kit?
- Before your baby comes home, so it is ready for minor scrapes, fevers or questions that come up.
