When you need it

An oral medicine syringe is useful from birth for any liquid medicine or vitamin your pediatrician recommends. It stays handy through about 60 months and beyond, since kitchen spoons are not accurate and most young children take liquid medicine for years before they can swallow pills.

What to look for

Look for clear, printed markings in milliliters (mL) that will not rub off after a few washes, so you can measure accurately every time. A soft, rounded tip is gentler on gums, and aiming toward the inside of the cheek usually goes more smoothly than the back of the throat. Check that the plunger moves smoothly and the parts come apart for washing and drying. Keep a few on hand, and ask your pediatrician or pharmacist to confirm the dose before giving any medicine.

Oral Medicine Syringe: common questions

Yes, it is a useful basic. Pharmacies often hand them out with liquid medicine, so you may already have one or two, but it is good to have spares.
