When you need it
A bath spout cover becomes useful from around 6 months, when babies graduate from an infant tub and start sitting up in the big bath. It stays helpful until around age 3, when kids are steadier in the tub, though some families keep one on longer simply because it's fun.
What to look for
Look for a soft, cushioned cover that fits your faucet shape snugly and won't slide off when bumped or tugged. Choose a material that drains and dries fully, since covers that trap water can grow mold inside; one that's easy to remove and rinse makes cleaning simple. Some include a built-in temperature indicator, which is a nice extra, but always test the water with your hand or elbow before baby gets in. A cover is no substitute for staying within arm's reach the entire bath.
Bath Spout Cover: common questions
- Do I need a bath spout cover?
- It's a nice-to-have, not an essential. Sitting baby at the opposite end of the tub, away from the faucet, covers much of the risk, and a folded washcloth can soften the spout in a pinch. Many parents still like one because bath time gets wiggly fast once a baby can sit and splash.
- When does a baby need a bath spout cover?
- A baby benefits from a bath spout cover once they sit up in the regular tub, usually from around 6 months.
