When you need it

A play yard comes in handy from around 4 months, when babies start rolling and need a safe spot on the floor while you cook, shower or answer the door. It stays useful as a travel bed and safe zone until around age 3, or until your child can climb out or reaches the height limit.

What to look for

Look for mesh sides with small openings, a firm floor pad and a sturdy frame where every rail locks fully into place. If baby will sleep in it, use only the pad it came with and a fitted sheet made for that size, with no extra mattress or soft bedding. Check that it meets your country's safety standard and note the weight and height limits. Easy folding and a carry bag matter if you'll take it to grandparents' houses or on trips.

Playpen (Mesh Play Yard): common questions

Do I need a playpen?
It's helpful but not essential. A fully babyproofed room or a gated-off area can serve the same purpose at home. Many families find it most worth it for travel and visits, where it doubles as a safe sleep space.
When does a baby need a playpen?
Babies benefit from a play yard from around 4 months, once they start rolling and moving more.
