When you need it
A bath thermometer is useful from birth, when you are still learning what comfortably warm bath water feels like for a tiny baby. Many parents stop using one around 12 months, once they can judge the temperature confidently by hand and bath routines feel second nature.
What to look for
Look for a clear digital readout or a simple color indicator that is easy to read at a glance while you hold your baby. A floating design stays visible in the tub instead of sinking out of sight. Check that it is fully waterproof, has a sealed battery compartment and is easy to wipe clean. Some models double as a bath toy for older babies, which stretches their usefulness.
Bath Thermometer: common questions
- Do I need a bath thermometer?
- Not essential. You can test the water with your elbow or the inside of your wrist and mix it well to avoid hot spots. A thermometer simply gives extra peace of mind, especially for first-time parents.
- When does a baby need a bath thermometer?
- From the first tub bath, especially if you are unsure about water temperature.
