When you need it

Blackout curtains can help from the start, but they really prove their worth once baby settles into regular daytime naps, usually after the first couple of months. They stay useful through the preschool years, especially in summer when the sun comes up early and sets late, up to around age 5 and beyond.

What to look for

Measure the window and choose panels or blinds that overlap the frame on every side, since light sneaks in around the edges. Cordless designs are the safest choice for a nursery, because loose cords can be a strangulation hazard; if you already have corded blinds, secure the cords high and out of reach. Thermal backing can help keep the room cooler in summer. Removable blackout film or suction-cup blinds work well for renters and travel.
