When you need it
A night light is useful from the first night feeds, giving you just enough light to change a diaper without fully waking baby. Later, around age 2 or 3, many toddlers start asking for one as they become more aware of the dark, and it can stay in the room through the preschool years.
What to look for
Choose a dim, warm-colored glow (amber or red tones) rather than bright white or blue light, which is more likely to wake everyone up. Adjustable brightness and an auto-off timer are handy. Make sure it stays cool to the touch, and keep plug-in models and any cords well away from the crib. A small rechargeable version you can carry to the changing table or bathroom is a nice bonus.
Night Light: common questions
- Do I need a night light?
- It's helpful but not essential. A dimmable lamp or light from the hallway can do the job for feeds. Many parents still like a dedicated night light because it's soft enough not to fully wake baby, and toddlers often find it comforting.
- When does a baby need a night light?
- Babies benefit from a night light from birth for night feeds, and toddlers often want one for comfort around age 2 or 3.
