When you need it

A bouncy seat is handy from the newborn weeks, giving you a safe spot to set baby down while you shower, cook or eat. It's most useful before baby can sit up or try to climb out, and most families stop using it somewhere around 6 to 9 months or once baby reaches the weight limit.

What to look for

Check the weight and age limits, a wide, stable base and a harness that's simple to buckle. A machine-washable cover helps, and a frame that folds flat is easier to store or take to the grandparents. Some bounce with baby's own movement while others vibrate; simple usually works fine. Always place it on the floor, never on a table or sofa.

Bouncy Seat: common questions

Do I need a bouncy seat?
It's a nice-to-have. Many parents love having a safe 'put down' spot, but a play mat on the floor works too. A bouncer isn't made for sleep, so if baby dozes off, move them to a flat, safe sleep space and follow the manufacturer's guidance.
When does a baby need a bouncy seat?
From the newborn stage until baby starts sitting up or reaches the seat's limit, often around 6 to 9 months.
