When you need it
Cloth books are among the first books a baby can actually handle. In the early months you'll be holding it and showing the pictures, and from around 4 months babies start grabbing, crinkling and chewing the pages themselves. By 12 months most are ready for sturdier board books they can flip on their own.
What to look for
Look for soft fabric with secure stitching, bright or high-contrast pictures and a few different textures to explore. Machine-washable is a big plus because these get mouthed constantly. A loop or clip makes it easy to attach to a stroller or diaper bag. Check that any tags and ribbons are short and firmly sewn.
Crinkle Cloth Book: common questions
- Do I need a crinkle cloth book?
- Not essential, but they're light, cheap and great to keep in the diaper bag for waiting rooms and stroller walks. A board book can do the job too; it just doesn't crinkle or survive teething quite as well.
- When does a baby need a crinkle cloth book?
- From the newborn months with a parent reading, and most actively from about 4 to 12 months.
