When you need it
A nursing pillow is most helpful from birth, when newborns are tiny and you are holding them at the breast or bottle for long stretches. Many parents use it through about 12 months, though it often becomes less necessary once babies are bigger and feeds get quicker.
What to look for
Choose a firm pillow that holds its shape instead of sagging under your baby's weight. A removable, machine-washable cover is a must, and having a spare cover helps on spit-up days. Check the shape against your body: some wrap around the waist with a buckle, while others are a classic C shape. Use it only for supervised feeding and propping, never for sleep.
Nursing Pillow: common questions
- Do I need a nursing pillow?
- It is a nice-to-have rather than essential. Regular bed pillows or cushions can support your arms and baby, but a dedicated pillow keeps things steadier, especially after a C-section or with twins.
- When does a baby need a nursing pillow?
- From the first days of feeding, when holding a newborn at the right height can strain your back and arms.
