When you need it
Burp cloths earn their place from the very first feed, since newborn spit-up is common and frequent. You will likely use them throughout the first year (up to around 12 months), and many parents keep a few around afterward for drool and quick spills.
What to look for
Look for several layers of absorbent cotton, muslin or bamboo that soak up milk instead of letting it slide off. A longer, contoured shape that drapes over your shoulder protects more of your shirt. They should survive hot washes and the dryer without shrinking or getting stiff. Buy more than you think you need, because a stack of eight to twelve keeps you from running out between laundry days.
Burp Cloths: common questions
- Do I need a burp cloths?
- You will want something to catch spit-up, but it does not have to be a dedicated product. Cloth diapers, muslin squares or old hand towels work just as well, so buy a few and see how many you actually use.
- When does a baby need a burp cloths?
- From birth, at every feed and burping session. Babies who spit up a lot may need several a day.
