When you need it
An activity spiral gets interesting once your baby notices bold colors and contrasts in the first months, and it really peaks when grabbing and mouthing begin. Most babies lose interest around 12 months, when they would rather watch the world go by or hold bigger toys.
What to look for
Choose a spiral with a mix of textures, crinkly fabric, soft rattles and high-contrast colors, all firmly stitched on. Check that there are no small parts that could come loose and that the materials are fine for mouthing and easy to wash. It should wrap snugly around a bar so nothing dangles near your baby's face or neck. Bonus points if it also fits a car seat handle, crib or play gym.
