When you need it
A convertible balance bike or scooter is useful from around 18 months, when toddlers can sit and push with their feet. Many models start as a low trike, then convert to a balance bike or scooter as kids grow, often until around 60 months. Balance bikes can help kids learn to balance before moving to a pedal bike.
What to look for
Look for an adjustable seat height so your child's feet reach the ground flat. Check the weight limit, the wheel quality and that the conversion is easy to do. A lightweight frame is easier for kids to handle. A well-fitting helmet is a must from the first ride, and follow the manufacturer's age guidance.
