When you need it

Large building bricks become useful around 18 months, when toddlers can press two bricks together and pull them apart. As hand strength and coordination grow, towers become houses and vehicles, and many kids keep building with them until around 60 months, sometimes moving on to smaller bricks after that.

What to look for

Choose bricks sized for small hands and too big to fit in a mouth. Durable plastic that's easy to wash is best, since bricks will be chewed and dropped. Check that the bricks click together with a gentle push and come apart without frustrating effort. A storage bin or bag with a handle makes cleanup quick.
