When you need it

A road rug becomes interesting around 12 months, when toddlers start pushing cars along the floor and making engine noises. As pretend play grows, the rug turns into a whole town with parking spots, crossings and garages. Many kids keep using it until around 60 months, especially if they love vehicles.

What to look for

Look for a low-pile or flat-weave rug, because cars roll badly on thick fluffy carpet. A non-slip backing stops it sliding on hard floors, and a washable or easy-to-vacuum material helps with crumbs. Clear roads with plenty of junctions keep play interesting. Measure your floor first, since large rugs can take over a small living room.

Town & Road Play Rug: common questions

Do I need a town & road play rug?
Not at all; it's a nice-to-have for car fans. Painter's tape roads on the floor are a cheap, temporary alternative that kids enjoy redesigning. If you'd like a dedicated play corner that also softens a hard floor, a road rug does both jobs.
When does a baby need a town & road play rug?
From around 12 months, when toddlers start pushing cars, up to about 5 years.
