When you need it
A mobile is at its best in the first few months, when babies spend a lot of time on their backs and love watching slow movement. Once baby can push up on hands and knees or reach for it, often around 5 months, it's time to take it down.
What to look for
Choose a mobile with a secure clamp or mount that fits your crib or changing table and keeps everything well out of baby's reach. Slow movement and soft sounds tend to soothe better than flashing lights. Make sure all parts are firmly attached and there are no long strings or cords. Follow the manufacturer's age guidance and remove it as soon as baby can reach up.
Crib or Changing-Table Mobile: common questions
- Do I need a crib or changing-table mobile?
- No. It's a sweet extra that can buy a minute of calm during diaper changes, but plenty of babies are just as content looking at your face, a window or a patterned wall. If you skip it, you won't miss much.
- When does a baby need a crib or changing-table mobile?
- From birth to around 5 months, before baby starts pushing up or reaching for it.
