When you need it

Fitted sheets are needed from the first night baby sleeps in a crib, bassinet or play yard, and you'll keep using them through the toddler-bed years until around age 4. Expect to change them often in the early months, thanks to spit-up and diaper leaks.

What to look for

Buy sheets made for the exact mattress size you have, with deep elastic all the way around so they hug the corners and can't be pulled loose. The sheet should be the only thing on the mattress besides your baby. Breathable cotton or muslin washes well and stays soft, and jersey knit gives a little extra stretch for an easy fit. After a few hot washes, check the fit is still snug, since shrinking sheets can pop off a corner. Bassinets and play yards usually need their own special sizes.

Fitted Crib Sheets: common questions

Do I need a fitted crib sheets?
Yes, you'll want a few. Two or three sheets per sleep space means one can be in the wash while another is on the bed, which matters at 3 a.m. after a leak. Regular flat sheets or tucked-in adult sheets aren't a safe substitute, because they can come loose and bunch up.
When does a baby need a fitted crib sheets?
A baby needs fitted sheets from the first night they sleep on a crib, bassinet or play yard mattress.
