When you need it

Formula can be used from birth by families who formula feed or combine formula with breast milk. It is designed for the first year, and around 12 months most children move on to whole milk or another drink your pediatrician suggests.

What to look for

All infant formula sold in the US must meet the same federal nutrition requirements, so a store brand can be a perfectly reasonable choice. Decide between powder (most economical), concentrate and ready-to-feed liquid (handy for newborns and travel). Check the expiration date, follow the mixing instructions exactly and only use the scoop that comes in the tub. Ask your pediatrician before choosing a specialty formula such as hydrolyzed or soy versions.

Infant Formula: common questions

Do I need an infant formula?
It depends on how you feed. Families who formula feed or combination feed need it, while some exclusively breastfeeding families like to keep a small unopened can at home as a backup. Talk with your pediatrician about which type suits your baby.
When does a baby need an infant formula?
Whenever you decide formula is part of your plan, which can be from birth. Your pediatrician can help with amounts and timing.
