When you need it

Medium-flow nipples usually come into play around 3 months, when some babies start working hard and getting frustrated at a slow bottle. They tend to stay useful until roughly 9 months or until your baby moves on to cups, but there is no rule that every baby must size up.

What to look for

Buy the medium size from the same bottle system you already use so everything screws together without leaks. Soft, food-grade silicone that is dishwasher-safe keeps cleaning simple. Watch your baby during the first few feeds: coughing, sputtering or milk pouring out of the mouth can mean the flow is too fast. A small pack is enough to test before you swap every bottle over.

Medium-Flow Nipples: common questions

Do I need a medium-flow nipples?
Not always. Many babies are perfectly content on slow-flow nipples well past three months, so it is worth waiting to see if your baby shows signs of frustration before buying.
When does a baby need a medium-flow nipples?
When feeds start taking much longer than usual or your baby fusses, collapses the nipple or pulls off repeatedly. That often happens somewhere around 3 months.
