When you need it

Sand toys become useful around 12 months, once toddlers can sit and scoop with a spade. Pouring, filling buckets and knocking down castles are endless fun at the beach, sandbox or park, and kids keep using them until around 60 months and beyond.

What to look for

Choose sturdy, BPA-free plastic that won't crack easily when stepped on. Rounded edges on spades and rakes are safer for toddlers. A mesh bag keeps everything together and lets sand fall out before you pack the car. Sets with a sieve, watering can and molds add more variety, and everything should rinse clean quickly.
