When you need it

A small freestanding slide suits toddlers from around 12 months, once they can climb a couple of steps with an adult spotting them. It builds climbing skills and confidence, and works indoors in winter or outside in summer. Most kids outgrow the short height and want bigger playground slides by around 48 months.

What to look for

Choose a slide with a wide, stable base, a short ladder with grippy steps and solid handrails at the top. The sliding surface should be smooth, with raised sides and a gentle run-out at the bottom. Check the weight limit and whether it folds or comes apart for storage. Place it on grass, a play mat or soft flooring rather than concrete, and always supervise.

Toddler Slide: common questions

Do I need a toddler slide?
It's a nice-to-have. Playground slides give toddlers the same thrill without taking up space at home. If you have room, though, a toddler slide can make a big difference on rainy days or when getting to the park is hard.
When does a baby need a toddler slide?
From around 12 months, when babies start climbing steps with help.
