When you need it
Slow-flow nipples are the usual starting point from birth, when newborns are still learning to coordinate sucking, swallowing and breathing. Many babies stay on them until around 3 months, though some happily use them longer, especially breastfed babies who switch between breast and bottle.
What to look for
Make sure the nipple fits your bottle brand, since most nipples are not interchangeable across systems. Look for soft, food-grade silicone that holds its shape and is dishwasher-safe or easy to boil. A wider, gently sloped base can help babies who also nurse get a comfortable latch. Plan to replace nipples every couple of months or sooner if you see tears, thinning or stickiness.
Slow-Flow Nipples: common questions
- Do I need a slow-flow nipples?
- If your baby takes bottles, yes. Most bottles already come with a slow or newborn nipple, so you may only need a few spares rather than a separate pack.
- When does a baby need a slow-flow nipples?
- From the very first bottle feed. A slower flow lets a newborn set the pace and take breaks, which is why most bottles ship with one.
