When you need it

Small stainless steel utensils fit well from around 18 months, when toddlers have better hand control and want to eat like the grown-ups. They stay useful through about 60 months, until kids are ready for regular adult cutlery.

What to look for

Choose food-grade stainless steel with rounded, dull edges and blunt fork tines that still spear food. Chunky, short handles are easier for small hands to grip and keep the utensil balanced. Dishwasher-safe pieces without painted or glued parts last longest. A slightly deeper spoon bowl helps with soups and yogurt.
