When you need it
A high chair becomes useful from around 6 months, when your baby can sit with support and is ready for solids. Most children use one until about 36 months, and convertible models can stay at the table even longer as a toddler chair.
What to look for
Stability matters most, so choose a wide base and a five-point or three-point harness. An adjustable footrest helps babies sit upright and eat comfortably. Look for a removable, dishwasher-safe tray or a design that pulls right up to your table, and avoid lots of fabric seams that trap food. Consider how much floor space you have and whether you need it to fold away.
High Chair: common questions
- Do I need a high chair?
- For most families, yes. A secure seat makes daily meals safer and easier. A hook-on chair or a booster with straps that fastens to a sturdy dining chair can work in smaller homes.
- When does a baby need a high chair?
- When your baby is starting solids and can sit upright with good head control, usually around 6 months. Always use the harness and stay close during meals.
