When you need it

A leak-proof straw bottle becomes useful from around 9 months, when babies can sip from a straw and spend more time on the go. It keeps earning its spot through about 60 months, for preschool, daycare and park trips.

What to look for

Look for a soft silicone straw, a flip-top or lid that locks, and a leak-proof seal that survives a toss in the bag. Stainless steel keeps water cool longer, while BPA-free plastic is lighter for small hands. Count the parts and make sure the straw and valve come apart for cleaning, ideally in the dishwasher. A handle or carry loop helps toddlers manage it themselves.
