When you need it

Busy books click with toddlers from around 18 months, when little fingers are ready to tug zips, open snaps and try buckles. Over the next couple of years the same pages become practice for buttons and laces, and by around 48 months most kids can do every activity easily and want something new.

What to look for

Pick sturdy felt or cotton pages with strong stitching, since toddlers will pull hard on every flap. Each activity should be firmly attached, with no small loose pieces, beads or buttons that could come off and be swallowed. A compact, flat book with a handle or strap is easier to slip into a carry-on or car seat pocket. Machine-washable fabric is a real plus after snacks and long trips.

Travel Busy Book: common questions

Do I need a travel busy book?
You don't need one, but they earn their place on flights and road trips. Because everything is attached, there's nothing to drop under the seat, and it offers quiet, screen-free focus for a few minutes at a time. Crafty parents sometimes make a simple version from felt, old zips and spare buckles.
When does a baby need a travel busy book?
Most toddlers are ready around 18 months and keep using one until about 4 years.
