When you need it
Tummy time starts in the early weeks, and a small wedge can make those first sessions a little less frustrating while neck and shoulder strength builds. Once babies push up confidently on straight arms, usually well before 6 months, they tend to roll right off it and prefer the open floor.
What to look for
Pick a firm, low wedge rather than a soft, squishy cushion. A removable, machine-washable cover is worth having because spit-up happens. Some come with attached crinkle toys or a small mirror, which is nice but not necessary. Follow the manufacturer's age guidance, use it only while you're right there watching, and never use it for sleep.
Tummy Time Pillow: common questions
- Do I need a tummy time pillow?
- No, it's a nice-to-have. A rolled-up towel under the chest, tummy time on your own chest, or a plain play mat works well for many babies. If your baby really struggles with tummy time, ask your pediatrician for ideas, and keep any pillow for supervised, awake play only.
- When does a baby need a tummy time pillow?
- It's most helpful in the first few months, during short, supervised tummy time sessions while baby is awake and alert.
