When you need it

Wrist and foot rattles are most fun around 2 to 4 months, when babies are discovering that those hands and feet belong to them. They can be used from birth during supervised awake play, and usually lose their charm by about 6 months, once baby can hold and shake regular toys.

What to look for

Choose soft bands with gentle stretch or a wide hook-and-loop closure that won't pinch or leave marks. The rattle should be sealed inside the fabric, with no buttons or beads that can work loose. Washable fabric is a must because they will be chewed. Take them off for naps and sleep, and only use them while you're nearby.

Wrist & Foot Rattles: common questions

Not really. They are a fun, inexpensive gift, but a regular rattle or simply singing and playing with baby's toes does the same job. Think of them as a small extra rather than something to buy before birth.
