When you need it

Silicone suction plates are useful from around 6 months, once babies start solids and try feeding themselves. They usually stay in rotation until about 36 months, when toddlers are less likely to toss their plate off the table.

What to look for

Check that the suction base grips a smooth tray or table firmly and releases with a tab rather than a fight. Food-grade silicone that is dishwasher-safe and microwave-safe makes daily use easier. Divided sections help keep foods separate for picky eaters. Make sure the plate fits your high chair tray before buying.
