When you need it

A travel booster or hook-on chair is useful from around 6 months, once your baby sits well and eats solids away from home. It tends to stay handy until about 36 months, when many kids can sit on a regular chair or a simple booster cushion.

What to look for

For hook-on chairs, check the table thickness range and confirm the clamps grip firmly without slipping. Boosters should have straps that fasten securely to the adult chair plus a harness for your child. A wipeable or machine-washable seat makes cleanup easy on the road. Look for something light that folds flat enough to fit in a tote, suitcase or car trunk.
