When you need it

Large-piece jigsaws become fun around 30 months, when kids can match edges, follow a picture and stick with a task for a few minutes. Start with simple puzzles of a few pieces and build up as confidence grows. By around 60 months many children can tackle bigger puzzles on their own.

What to look for

Look for thick cardboard or wooden pieces that are easy to handle and won't bend or peel. Floor puzzles with big pieces are great for working together on the rug. Check the piece count against your child's age, and choose bright, clear pictures. A sturdy box or bag keeps pieces from going missing.
