When you need it

Mineral sunscreen is generally recommended from around 6 months, when babies start spending more time outside. Younger babies should be kept in shade and covered with clothing; ask your pediatrician for guidance. Kids need sunscreen through the preschool years and beyond, often until around 60 months and well after.

What to look for

Look for a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, and a high SPF. Fragrance-free and water-resistant formulas are a good choice. A stick or lotion is easier to apply on squirmy kids than a spray. Test on a small patch of skin first, reapply often, and follow the label's guidance.
