When you need it

A toddler swim vest is usually designed for children from around 12 months, when they're more mobile in and around water. It can help kids practice kicking and paddling with an adult nearby. Many families use one until around 60 months, while kids are learning to swim.

What to look for

Look for a vest that fits snugly, follows the manufacturer's weight and size guidance and has secure buckles or zips. Foam inserts are more durable than inflatable chambers. A crotch strap helps keep it from slipping up. Remember a swim vest is a swim aid and not a life-saving device, so keep constant adult supervision within arm's reach.

Toddler Swim Vest: common questions
