When you need it
A UV swimsuit or rash guard is useful from birth, since long sleeves and legs cover delicate skin when you're near sun and water. Kids keep wearing them for swimming and beach days through the preschool years and beyond, sizing up as they grow, so they often stay in use until around 60 months.
What to look for
Look for fabric labeled with a high UPF rating, long sleeves and legs, and a comfortable, non-restrictive fit. A front zip makes dressing a wiggly baby much easier, and flat seams reduce rubbing. Quick-dry fabric helps prevent chills after swimming. Pair it with a sun hat and, for babies 6 months and up, sunscreen on exposed skin.
UV Swimsuit / Rash Guard: common questions
- Do I need an uv swimsuit / rash guard?
- If you plan to spend time at the pool or beach, yes. Sun-protective swimwear covers more skin than sunscreen alone and is easier to manage than reapplying on a squirmy baby. For babies under 6 months, ask your pediatrician about the best sun protection approach. Swimwear is not a flotation aid, so keep constant adult supervision within arm's reach in and around water.
- When does a baby need an uv swimsuit / rash guard?
- From birth, whenever your baby will be in the sun or near water.
