When you need it
Swim diapers become necessary from around 3 months, once you start taking baby into pools, lakes or the sea, and many pools require them for anyone not yet toilet trained. They stay in the swim bag until your child is reliably potty trained, often somewhere around 36 months.
What to look for
Look for a snug fit around the legs and waist, since a swim diaper is designed to contain solids rather than absorb liquid. Snaps on the sides make it much easier to remove a messy diaper without pulling it down the legs. Quick-dry fabric with built-in sun protection is a nice bonus. Buy a couple of sizes as baby grows, and rinse and wash after every use.
Reusable Swim Diapers: common questions
- Do I need a reusable swim diapers?
- If you plan to swim, yes. Regular diapers swell up and fall apart in water, and disposable swim diapers add up over a summer. One or two reusable ones are usually enough, and some public pools ask for a reusable diaper worn over a disposable one, so check their rules. Whatever your baby wears, keep constant adult supervision within arm's reach in and around water.
- When does a baby need a reusable swim diapers?
- From around 3 months, or whenever you first take baby swimming, until potty training is done.
