When you need it
A play kitchen becomes useful from around 18 months, when toddlers start copying what they see you do in the kitchen. Pretend cooking, serving and cleaning up can keep them busy for long stretches, and many children keep playing with one until around 60 months.
What to look for
Look for a sturdy, stable kitchen that won't tip when kids lean on the oven door or climb on it. Check for smooth edges, secure knobs and non-toxic finishes. Measure your space and check the counter height, which should be comfortable for your child. Accessories like pots, utensils and play food add value.
Play Kitchen: common questions
- Do I need a play kitchen?
- It's a nice-to-have rather than a must. A few real pots, wooden spoons and a cardboard box can make a great pretend kitchen. If you have the room, a play kitchen often becomes a long-lasting favorite.
- When does a baby need a play kitchen?
- From around 18 months, when pretend play begins, until about 5 years.
