When you need it

Preschool board games become fun from around 36 months, when kids can take turns and follow simple rules. Cooperative games, where everyone works together, are great for teaching patience without too many tears. Many preschoolers enjoy them until around 60 months, when they move on to more complex games.

What to look for

Look for simple, cooperative games with short turns, large pieces and clear rules. Durable cardboard and wooden pieces last longer. Check that the game is designed for your child's age and that there are no small parts for younger siblings. Short games, around 10 to 15 minutes, keep attention.
