When you need it
A wooden train set becomes fun from around 24 months, when toddlers can push trains along tracks and start joining pieces. Building layouts takes practice, and as kids grow, they create bigger, more complex tracks with bridges and tunnels, often until around 60 months.
What to look for
Look for solid wood tracks and trains with smooth edges and non-toxic finishes. Check that the pieces fit together easily and that magnets connecting the cars are securely set. Starter sets with a figure-eight or loop are a good first step, and many brands are compatible with each other. Storage bins keep pieces together.
Wooden Train Set: common questions
- Do I need a wooden train set?
- It's not essential, but trains are a classic for good reason. They encourage long, screen-free play, problem-solving and storytelling. A road rug with cars can be a lower-cost alternative.
- When does a baby need a wooden train set?
- Most toddlers are ready around 2 years, when they can push trains and join track pieces.
