When you need it
The going-home outfit is used on the day you leave the hospital or birth center, so it is needed from birth and only fits for the first few weeks. Many families keep it afterward as a keepsake.
What to look for
Pick a soft outfit that is easy to put on, with snaps or a zip rather than buttons. Bring two sizes (newborn and 0-3 months), since you will not know your baby's size until birth. It should allow the car seat harness to fit snugly, so avoid bulky layers. Add a hat and blanket for over the harness if the weather is cold.
Going-Home Outfit: common questions
- Do I need a going-home outfit?
- You need something for your baby to wear home, but it does not have to be special. A simple sleeper or bodysuit works perfectly. A dedicated outfit is more about photos and memories.
- When does a baby need a going-home outfit?
- A baby needs a going-home outfit at birth for the trip home. It usually fits only for the first weeks.
