When you need it
A snowsuit or bunting is useful from the first winter outings, especially in cold climates. Most babies use one until around 2 years, when they move to a two-piece snowsuit or winter jacket and pants.
What to look for
Look for warm, water-resistant fabric, fold-over hand and foot covers and a full-length zip for easy dressing. Breathable layers prevent overheating. Never use a bulky snowsuit under a car seat harness, since it can make the harness too loose; buckle your baby in regular clothes and add a blanket over the harness instead. Check sizing so there is room for layers.
Snowsuit or Bunting: common questions
- Do I need a snowsuit or bunting?
- In cold climates a snowsuit or bunting is close to essential. In mild climates, layered clothing and a stroller footmuff may be enough. Ask your pediatrician if you have questions about keeping your baby warm.
- When does a baby need a snowsuit or bunting?
- A baby needs a snowsuit or bunting once temperatures drop and you go outside. That can start in the first winter.
