When you need it
A sun hat is useful from the first weeks for outdoor time, since babies have sensitive skin. It stays useful up to about 5 years and beyond, for beach days, playgrounds and summer walks.
What to look for
Look for a wide brim, a neck flap or full coverage at the back, and a breakaway or adjustable chin strap that keeps it on without being tight. Breathable, sun-protective fabric is ideal, and a hat that can go in the wash is a plus. Check that it fits snugly without pressing, and that the brim does not flop into your child's eyes. Ask your pediatrician about sun protection for young babies.
Sun Hat: common questions
- Do I need a sun hat?
