When you need it

Newborn hats are useful in the first days and weeks, when babies are new to regulating their temperature and hospitals often send one home. Most babies need them only until around 3 months, apart from weather-specific hats for cold or sun later.

What to look for

Look for soft, breathable cotton that stretches gently and does not leave marks. Avoid pom-poms, ties or decorations that could come loose. A couple of hats is plenty. Do not let your baby sleep in a hat at home unless your pediatrician advises it, and check that they are not overheating.
